Screen resolution on Debian Linux

I use Xfce. By default, my screen resolution is 1440x900. This is not correct. Things on the left are missing. The screen appears to move to the left hand side.

To adjust it, I select:

Applications Menu -> Settings ->
Display -> Resolution -> 1280x960

Things on the left are back.
